Mercury Retrograde in Cap

Mercury stations retrograde today, December 29th through January 18th, 2023,

in the Sign of Capricorn

💫 What is a Retrograde?

✨ The term retrograde comes from the Latin word "retrogradus", which translates to “backward step.” A retrograde is when a planet appears to go backward in its orbit, from our perspective on Earth. Astronomers call it an “apparent retrograde motion,” because it is an optical illusion. Even though it's an optical illusion we feel the effects in our personal lives and on a global scale.

✨ We experience Mercury retrograde generally as a problematic influence because it can delay communications and travel, create technology issues and breakdowns as well as bring confusion within our communications and relationships.

✨ Mercury will be retrograde in Capricorn, the sign that rules goals and long-term plans, of course, right when we make our New Year's resolutions.

✨ The good thing? Mercury retrograde begins with a conjunction with the planet Venus. Just a few hours after stationing retrograde, Mercury meets up with Venus, the planet of connection, beauty, and love. This meetup might bring a sense of support and more ease to the first days of the retrograde.

✨ The challenging thing? (Or even more challenging thing) about this retrograde is that Mars is also still in Retrograde in Gemini, one of the signs that Mercury rules. A double whammy? Will Mars bring even more fire and explosion to the frustration? We will see...

🌿 What does Mercury retrograde mean in Medical Astrology?

And what health practices can support us through it?

✨ Mercury rules the nerve function and nervous system, the brain and speed of synapses, as well as the organs and body parts of communication and speech (ears, vocal cords, tongue, hands, fingers)

✨Mercury's main quality is nervous. When in retrograde, we might feel its influence as a malfunction, itch, or neural pain in the sign where it travels backward.

✨Generally during Mercury retrograde our nervous system, the speed of our thinking, as well as the body parts used for communicating can feel off. The speed of our synapses might slow down which causes a "foggy brain". Now throw in some chaos that happens around you and you have the perfect nervous system disaster.

Mercury also weakens the nerves that send messages to the lungs. During those weeks we don't breathe out bad air effectively, which makes us susceptible to lung infections, increased bronchial fluids, and phlegm. Do you experience Asthma flair-ups? Mercury in retrograde might trigger especially Asthma that is caused by nervousness.

✨And if that wasn't enough our gut can also go crazy. We all know there is a connection between our stress levels and our digestion. If not and you never experienced diarrhea before an important exam, you're lucky my friend. But yeah, that's what it does. Our nervous system runs crazy so does our digestion.

✨ This time around Mercury goes retrograde through the sign of Capricorn. Cap is an earth sign, ruled by Saturn and governs the bones, joints (especially knee joint), teeth, ligaments, connective tissue, hair, nails, generally the structure in the body, and minerals.

✨ Mercury can cause neural pain in the joints especially the knees, trick knee, sensitive skin or joints, dry and itchy skin, nervous teeth grinding, teeth pain

🌿🌿🌿How to support our health and well-being through Mercury Retrograde

Generally, we want to support Mercury's nervousness during this time. Calming crystals like Aquamarine combined with Lepidolite are my favorite crystals to calm the nervous system. Moos Agate and Apophyllite are the best crystals to support lung function.

The best essential oil to support the lung function, general support through cold season and is calming as a bonus - is Ho Wood

Balance the air element of Mercury with getting outdoors, exercise, herbal teas like lemon balm, surround yourself with the colors green, blue, and purple

Breathing techniques like Nadi Shohdana help calm the mind and boost the lung function.

A straight-forward way to do it is to sit down, close your eyes, press down the right nostril with your thumb, inhale through the left nostril, switch nostril, press down the left nostril and exhale through the right nostril. Now stay here for your inhale, switch and press the right nostril down as you exhale through the left, stay here for the inhale, and continue with this pattern for a couple of breaths.

Wirth Mercury causing trouble in Capricorn's territory, we want to support Capricorn's element of Earth with literally bringing that element into our day. Be creative! - but a very easy thing to incorporate into your day is to go out in nature for walks, eat root veggies, wear green and brown.

Want to take it further? Incorporate grounding practices like a root chakra meditation, walk barefoot on grass, get a grounding bed sheet. Any type of nourishing and moisturizing skin treatments are welcome under this retrograde.

✨Ever curious about Heavy Metals in your body? This is a good time to get checked.

✨A visit to the dentist or dental hygienist is a very good idea. Not sure if you grind your teeth?

Yeah - ask your dentist!

It's important to mention that transits affect us in different ways based on our individual birth chart. Where some might feel the influence more on a physical level, others might feel it on an emotional or spiritual level. Some might not notice anything at all because of other stronger placements in their charts.
